The 1000 Holy Names of Lord Vishnu
Last Updated on February 1, 2023
One of the three ultimate deities (Trimurti) in Hinduism, Vishnu, is a Hindu god and the Supreme God of Vaishnavism.
In the Trimurti, the Hindu Trinity of divinity, he is seen as “the Preserver or the Protector,” one of God’s five principal manifestations in the Smarta tradition.

There is a prayer in Hinduism that has 1000 names of lord Vishnu, named Shri Vishnu Sahasranamam. Sahasra or Sahastra implies one thousand names, and Naman is the term or characteristics given to Shri Vishnu for his various avatars and acts that have benefited the Universe to a large extent.
For people who don’t know the author of Shri Vishnu Sahasranamam, Sri Veda Vyasa is credited with writing the Shri Vishnu Sahasranamam in the early sixth century A.D. It is believed that Sri Veda Vyasa was once concentrating on Lord Vishnu when these names began to surface in his mind, and he wrote them down.

Each of these names carries a sacred connotation. According to my nani, reading the thousand names of Lord Vishnu is said to bring good fortune and the blessings of the lord (I don’t know if this is true, though).
So, now as you have been introduced to Lord Vishnu and the holy prayer Vishnu Sahasranama, let’s take a look at the 1000 names of Lord Vishnu.
