Can a Person Be Both Religious and Spiritual?
Last Updated on July 3, 2022
There are many people I have heard saying, “I am not religious, I am spiritual” but I do not understand why they fear being labelled as being religious but not spiritual.
Many people explain this by saying they do not want to be under the rules and regulations of religions because spirituality has none.
Can Spirituality And Religion Coexist?
So now one may ask, can a person be both religious and spiritual?
Yes, a person can be both religious and spiritual at the same time.
You can live your spiritual life and be religious by agreeing or disagreeing with the religion’s beliefs and following the spiritual truths. Spiritualty and religions both offer a path to God-realization.
Let’s find out how you can practice being both religious and spiritual.
How You Can Be Religious and Spiritual?
Firstly, understand that there is no one path towards God-realization. You can realize God while being religious and also by being spiritual.
Here’s how a person can be both religious and spiritual.
1. Read Religious Texts
In order to understand religion and spirituality deeply, try to read books of any religion you love.
There are many books you can read and trust me you’ll gain a lot of knowledge about the real truths of religion because honestly, nowadays the so-called “Preachers” of religions misguide people.
2. Practice Meditation
By practising meditation, you can be both religious and spiritual at the same time.
You can do rituals and meditate because in this way you are doing both outwardly(religious activity) and inwardly(spiritual activity).
3. Realise That God is Everywhere
Understand the truth that God is all-pervading and he is present everywhere. The air you breathe, the rain you enjoy, the soil, sun, water you drink, etc, God is present.
I hear people saying religion is bad you cannot realize God but you can if you have faith. I don’t support idol worshipping, but I understand that not everyone can pray in the same way.
Some people love idol worshipping, but some don’t, and that’s fine because it doesn’t matter. God is everywhere.
Remember that a religious person can be spiritual, and a spiritual person can be religious at the same time, what he needs is a proper understanding of both.
4. Embrace What You Like
Be it religious practices or spiritual, embrace what you like. If you don’t find something useful, just avoid it because you should do what you love at the end of the day. If you love doing rituals, do it if you don’t do it.
But just pray to God in whatever way you like. Just believe in God because that’s important. To be religious and spiritual one must embrace the way one likes to be close to God because there is no rule book.
Can Spirituality Exist Without Religion?
Yes, spirituality can exist without religion, spirituality is about being connected to a higher being. But religion on the other hand is about believing in a particular idol, which that religion believe is God. They both can exist without one another.
They both emphasise faith, hence they both can exist and cannot exist without each other.
Conclusion
In conclusion, you are what you choose to be.
You can be both religious and spiritual at the same time if you understand what they actually are, and yes, it’s possible to be both.
But the most important thing is to be a good human being. No matter if you are a religious or spiritual seeker, just be a humble being. Well, in my opinion, being both is a bonus because it will give a bigger understanding and perspective in understanding what God is and how can one realize him.
