Neeraj Chopra’s Journey
Born and brought up in a small town called Khandara in Haryana. Neeraj was an obese child who was often body-shamed by his friends and neighbour kids. He weighed almost 90 kgs when he was just 12 years old.
Neeraj’s parents noticed their son being body shamed. So his father enrolled him in a gym. As his town didn’t have any playground or any gym, he used to travel 6 km to work out. Later, because of his disliking of the gym, he was enrolled in another gymnasium in Panipat, and that’s where his love for Javelin started.
While training in Panipat, he noticed some javelin throwers and started playing himself. At the Sports Authority of India centre in Panipat, javelin thrower Jaiveer Choudhary (Neeraj’s first coach) got impressed by his talent when he threw the Javelin 40m away with no training.
That was the day when he began his training and trained under many professional athletes. Thereafter, he convinced his parents to become an athlete, and the rest is history.
He won many medals, became India’s first-ever javelin thrower to win a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Became the first Indian athlete to achieve a world record in the U20 World Championship, which was held in Poland.
Unfortunately, he met with a right elbow injury in 2019. But he recovered and trained like a champ. Made his debut in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and made the entire nation proud by bringing a Gold medal in Javelin with a throw of 87.58 m.
Though he is not the first Indian athlete to bring India’s first Olympic medalist in athletics, but has made every person proud.
This was just a glimpse of Neeraj’s spectacular journey. Now, let’s find out how you can achieve your dreams and become successful in life like him.
Secrets To Achieve Your Dreams Like Neeraj Chopra
Take Motivation From Your Bad Days
“We are farmers, nobody in the family has a government job and my family has been supporting me with difficulty. But it is a sort of relief now that I am able to support my family financially besides continuing with my training”
Neeraj Chopra has seen many tough days. His neighbourhood kids bullied him for being chubby. His family’s financial condition was not so great, despite that he worked hard enough to achieve his goals and to make his nation and parents proud.
In another interview by IANS, Neeraj said: “If I were going thorough the same struggle today, I would have quit. I might have opted for other fields. That was the time when I was going through strenuous training practices and was focusing a lot to maintain myself as a sportsperson. Even I had to keep my family happy and live upto their expectations so all these factors motivated me and still motivates me.” – Neeraj Chopra
For Neeraj, he gets motivated by remembering his bad days and works hard to never see them again.
You must have had bad days too, and we all experience some hard times in life. But only a few pass through those phases. Do you know why? The reason is simple; they don’t give up; they don’t accept that defeat.
You must accept defeats, you must carry them and remember them so that they become your drive to achieve your dreams.
Never Fear Your Opposition
“I just want to say, no matter who the opposition is, give your best. That is all you need to do and this is what this gold medal stands for. Never fear the opposition.” – Neeraj Chopra
Fear always takes over our minds and makes us believe that we are incapable of achieving success in life. Most often, fear comes from our opposition. When we think we cannot beat our opponent our fear grows.
People stop performing their actions just because they fear losing, even though they have capabilities.
You must not fear challenges, opponents and defeats. They all are a part of life, but they are not as strong as you. In order to become like Neeraj Chopra, you need to become fearless like him.
Fear often germinates from childhood traumas or past experiences. Find them, notice them, and remove them. The day you become fearless, that would be the day when you will become unbeatable. Start by not expecting defeat and success. By this, you will be more optimistic and will give more weight to performing actions.
But fearless comes at a cost. Many people who have achieved fearlessness failed, just because they became egoistic and arrogant. But do you see these traits in Neeraj?
He is humble and calm, that’s why he has achieved his dreams. To become fearless and humble at the same time, and you will be undefeatable in life.
Go Hard Or Go Home
“I believe if you want to get into a competition with confidence then your training before the competition matters a lot. It’s years of training and hard work that helps you go into a competition in a positive frame of mind”
Behind every successful person is years of training and hard work which he put into his craft. For Neeraj, it was just about training hard or going home because there is no substitute for training.
If you want to achieve your goals and want to be successful like Neeraj Chopra, then you must train like him. You must be prepared well because you never know when life brings you a challenge.
Well, Magic Johnson has said rightly that “Talent is never enough. With few exceptions, the best players are the hardest workers.”
Remember that an unprepared always lose battles in life.
